On October 13th, 2018 the Hospice and Palliative Care Day will be celebrated worldwide. It is a day to bring awareness and support for the palliative care services and the importance of the hospice work, as well as to bring the society’s attention to the problems for incurably ill people and opportunities to offer help and relief thereof.
This year the theme for the World Hospice and Palliative Care day is: “Palliative Care – because I matter!” The founder of the Palliative Care, Cicely Saunders has said: “You matter because you are you and you matter until the end of your life” The theme of the World Hospice and Palliative Care day points to the importance of each patient’s individual needs, to the upholding of the principles of justice and the respect for human rights – “If I matter, then why am I not getting the care I need?”
In Latvia the World Hospice and Palliative Care day ie being celebrated with a special masterclass “Nutrition Therapy Solutions for Palliative Care Patients”. Adequate nutritional intake is often difficult, if not impossible, for the palliative care patients. Therefore in order to ensure the intake of the necessary nutrients for the patients, special enteral nutrition drinks are given that often times have an unpleasant taste.
The parents and the medical and care staff will be given the opportunity, by listening to lectures, as well as participating in practical workshops, to learn new recipes on how to prepare tasty foods from the special enteral blends and increase the calorie intake for patients suffering from malnutrition. The practical cooking masterclass is organized by The Children’s Palliative Care Society’s palliative care team and the “Nutricia” specialists.
